The official website of the ranking of universities, the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, has published information about the positions of the best universities in the world, which were included in the rankings for 2021.
It is gratifying to note that among 313 higher education institutions in Ukraine, Precarpathian University took 24th place in the international ranking. The university has improved its performance in the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities compared to 2020 (in 2020 PNU took 28th place).
The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is the highest academic ranking of higher education institutions which analyzes the representation of university activities on the Internet. Every six months it provides independent, objective, free, open scientific information on the performance of universities across the world.
The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is an initiative of the Laboratory of Cybermetrics, a research group owned by the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain.
The initial goal of the rankings was to promote a scientific presence of higher education institutions on the Internet, to support Open Access initiatives to significantly increase the transfer of scientific and cultural knowledge created by universities. To achieve this goal, publishing the rankings is one of the most powerful and successful tools for consolidating a change in academia, increasing the commitment of scientists, and developing much-needed long-term strategies.
The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is not a ranking of university websites, but it is a ranking of universities. It uses both webmetric and bibliometric (research) indicators. That is, the purpose of the ranking is not to evaluate websites, their design, convenience, or the popularity of their content according to the number of visits. Web indicators are considered through a correct, comprehensive, in-depth assessment of the university’s global performance, taking into account its performance and results, their significance, and impact. Its main goal is to promote open access to the knowledge provided by the university.
